The Republic of Plato is the longest of his works except for the Laws, and is positively the best of them. The best of every single intelligent truth, and the one of which essayists on way of thinking are generally adept to lose sight, the contrast among words and things, has been most exhaustingly demanded by him (cp. Neither must we fail to remember that the Republic is nevertheless the third piece of a still bigger plan which was to have incorporated an ideal history of Athens, just as a political and actual way of thinking. The section of the Critias has brought forth a world-well known fiction, second just in significance to the story of Troy and the legend of Arthur; and is said as a reality to have motivated a portion of the early guides of the sixteenth century. This legendary story, of which the subject was a background marked by the conflicts of the Athenians against the Island of Atlantis, should be established upon an incomplete sonnet of Solon, to which it would have remained in similar connection as the works of the logographers to the sonnets of Homer. It would have recounted a battle for Liberty (cp. Tim.), expected to address the contention of Persia and Hellas. We may decide from the honorable initiation of the Timaeus, from the section of the Critias itself, and from the third book of the Laws, in what way Plato would have treated this high contention. We can just think about why the incredible plan was deserted; maybe on the grounds that Plato got reasonable of some disjointedness in an invented history, or in light of the fact that he had lost his advantage in it, or in light of the fact that propelling years restricted the fulfillment of it; and we may satisfy ourselves with the extravagant that had this nonexistent account at any point been done, we ought to have discovered Plato himself feeling for the battle for Hellenic autonomy (cp.
