A few years ago my Father, who had dementia, went missing for a few hours. He was nowhere to be found near his house. I was in a panic! I searched all the stores he frequented on the avenue and those he didn’t, but no one had seen him. I drove all over the neighborhood. I had my husband log into Dad’s credit card account, which I managed, to see if he had used it anywhere, but he had not. I had the idea to have my husband place an alert on the account so I would be notified if it were used. Fifteen minutes later (!) I got a text – the card was used at Lenny’s Pizza. Twenty-six blocks from where he lived! I have no idea how my frail father walked so far, or where he thought he was going.

I owned a pizza shop for 7 years, and this is the beauty of customer service that a lot of people don’t get to experience. Your customers become your family. You look forward to seeing them and hearing what they have to say. You hear about their new job, heartache, family, dreams, struggles, and big aspects of their life. Every person that you walk past every day has a story to share, and there’s something intimate, comfortable, and familiar about sitting down at a restaurant and sharing your story over a meal..  “Those slices add up” – it really is the repeated micro interactions that build up strongest friendships and relationships . Sometimes you don’t realize how big a part you play in a person’s life. You’re just doing your job, bidding your time, but to them, you’re a destination. . You never know how much you touch other people’s lives.
