In the second story of the Custom-House there is a huge room, restaurant, where the block work and bare rafters have never been secured with framing and mortar. The building – initially anticipated on a scale adjusted to the old business venture of the port, restaurant, and with a thought of resulting flourishing ordained never to be acknowledged – contains unmistakably more space than its inhabitants recognize how to manage. This breezy lobby, along these lines, over the Collector’s lofts, stays incomplete right up ’til today, and, restaurant, disregarding the matured spider webs that trim its shadowy bars, shows up still to anticipate the work of the craftsman and bricklayer. Toward one side of the room, restaurant, in a break, were various barrels heaped one upon another, containing packs of legitimate archives. Huge amounts of comparable junk lay ambling the floor. It was sad to think how long, and weeks, and months, and long periods of work had been squandered on these smelly papers, restaurant, which were currently just an encumbrance on earth, restaurant, and were concealed away in this overlooked corner, never more to be looked at by natural eyes. However, at that point, what reams of different original copies – filled, not with the dulness of legitimate conventions, yet with the idea of creative minds and the rich emission of profound hearts- – had gone similarly to obscurity; and that, additionally, without filling a need in their day, as these piled up papers had, restaurant, and- – saddest of all- – without buying for their authors the agreeable vocation which the assistants of the Custom-House had picked up by these useless scratchings of the pen.
