I think this is just as valid and commendable a response as Gene’s was. It’s incredible that Gene is able to forgive him, but you were hurt by this man too. You have every right to be angry, both on Gene’s behalf and for yourself. So if holding that anger is what you want to do, then don’t let anyone try to convince you to forgive him. That man doesn’t deserve your forgiveness, and it’s perfectly okay for you to withhold it from him.. I know people are going to say, “forgive him,” “let go of the anger,” “the anger only hurts you, not him” but I’m with you, sister. That anger and hatred toward someone who shattered your life can fuel you to move forward when it seems like there is nothing else to propel you on. The conflicting ideas of forgiveness and anger. Not all things can be forgiven and forgotten. And I don’t think they should be.. One year definitely seems unjust!. One year? That’s all? Our justice system need a huge overhaul. He should’ve spent his life in jail.. I’m sorry that neither you nor Gene received justice. You have every right to be angry. Sometimes that anger can help you live through an incredible injustice. It is a privilege of the untraumatized to declare that someone else should forgive. You owe no one forgiveness. That is a personal choice and I do not blame you for not choosing to do so now or even perhaps ever. My 23-year-old sister was murdered in front of her four-year-old son and set on fire in 2012. The man responsible will spend only 10 years in prison for something that changed my family’s lives irrevocably. I do not truly know if I can ever forgive him especially as he has never expressed remorse for what he did. It is not for anyone else to place guilt on another to forgive. While forgiveness can often heal – sometimes so does recognizing the injustice that was committed and allowing yourself to feel normal human emotions like anger over it.
