Humans of New York, my daughter was 15 years old (young) and her friend asked her to go with her to a modelling agency (in Belgium) which would offer free training if you were selected blahblahblah. My daughter went, to support her friend (and you can see where this is going, but wait) was selected instead of her friend. NOW. For her final exams, my daughetr had found this video on youtube of a “Darlene” making this SUPER turn. She practised it before the mirror for hours, she had me watching it for hours. And what had started out as a joke “wtf do they want ME for???”became an obsession: she was going to get that certification, and she was going to get it with the “Darlene-turn”. Happiness is waking up with a Brit t-shirt She did. I’m still angry video-ing was not allowed. My throat was sore for 4 days after she made the perfect “Darlene-turn”.

Love that HONY is doing this! We can do more. What if for every dollar you send Henry (or any of HONY’s NYC features), you make sure to spend that same amount or more at a business not fortunate enough to be highlighted here? Use the inspiring stories to spread the love in your own neighborhood; your local businesses need you too! . Henry was open during a blizzard once and saved my husband’s feet with a pair of combat boots. We were in the city for the week after moving away from NY many years before and were not prepared for how bad the snow got. Such kindness and such an iconic fixture of The LES. Hang in there! You’re part of what makes New York so great!. Henry needs social media such as Instagram and website. This would help. Omg I remember that dancer! I use to love that show! So cool she has contact with her dancing idol!. I absolutely loved Solid Gold and Darcel! That brings back great memories of dancing in my living room!. I remember Darcel! Back in the day Solid Gold posters were inside cereals and I got one out of my Super Sugar Crisp. I put it on my wall and of all the dancers your eye was just commanded to Darcel. Your photo has that same regal quality.. Love this entry so much. You’re beauty and grace.. Omg – I loved Solid Gold as a kid! My childhood dream was to be a teacher by day & Solid Gold danced by night (neither of those dreams came to fruition, lol). I am so happy to hear your story! I, too, was a big fan of Darcel! I used to get dressed up in a body suit just to dance along with her i would wait for her close up and copy her moves it felt like I was dancing right beside her my family still talk about it today! As a young white child, I appreciate that one of my first role models was a strong Black woman In a world of white barbie dolls. Denise Taylor
